Darwin is in remission from Leukemia, to which Frances got the opportunity to donate bone marrow to her brother but failed to be a positive match, her older brother Bert (Nathan Stevens) being able to donate instead. This was part of the plot I didn’t really understand as a kid, but can wrap my brain around now. Turns out, Larry is the former imaginary friend of Frances’s little brother Darwin (Jake Sakson), who has stopped believing in him due to a speech Frances gave her sibling about what it truly means to be an adult. Frances and Larry are often at odds with each other, Frances is resistant to believe in something supernatural and thus she doubts Larry every step of the way, while Larry is often resentful of Frances for something she has done to him in the past. So the majority of the film involves the interactions of Frances and Larry as the two don’t exactly have a cookie-cutter relationship, which I found refreshing. This was Disney Channel’s third “Halloween” DCOM, preceded by “Halloweentown” in 1998 and then a film I covered last year, 1997’s “Under Wraps”. Not all of the ways the Boogieman frames Frances are as bad as this example, but it’s definitely the weaker parts of the film’s story when we’re just supposed to believe it plausible that the entire town could deem her a worthy suspect with little proof. This act is later used as evidence against her, as the teacher who caught her doing this, argues she is checking up on those she has told to help perform the prank, circumstantial evidence at best. When the clocks are turned back three hours, Frances is so curious, the next day her teacher finds her taking a survey to see who this incident has affected. Yeah the pranks are nothing serious and the ways Frances’s classmates and neighbors all start to suspect her with little evidence is noticeably flat. Now even as I type this, it sounds a bit silly, and it is but the film actually pulls it off. Larry isn’t all fun and games as he believes the pranks to be the work of The Boogieman (Steve Valentine) who is out to get Frances. Much like, “Drop Dead Fred”, Frances is seeing an imaginary friend named Larry Houdini (Eric “Ty” Hodges II) a child-like comedian with plenty of costume changes and props he pulls out of thin air, think a live action Genie from “Aladdin”.

What makes these incidences most troubling to Frances is that everyone in town starts to suspect her as the culprit.Īs these pranks are performed, Frances begins to see a young man following her around, a person no one else seems to see.

First all the clocks in town are moved forward three hours, neighborhoods have dogs put onto their owner’s roofs, the school swimming pool is filled with Jell-O, and many more.

Her world is shaken up when a series of pranks start to erupt around town. This Halloween DCOM is a story about young Frances McCausland (Erin Chambers) who is your average Midwesterner, she’s smart having skipped a grade and is very driven on being a rational person and not really a dreamer. Plot: A young girl must team up with her little brother’s imaginary friend to defeat The Boogeyman who has framed her for a series of disruptive pranks. Starring: Erin Chambers, Eric “Ty” Hodges II, Robin Riker, Steve Valentine, Mary Parker Williams, Geoff Hansen, Barry Yourgrau, Jake Sakson, Stephen Tobolowsky, Nathan Stevens, RuDee Sade, Rachel Kimsey.
